Eugenio Díaz Castro

Eugenio Díaz Castro

Colombia (1803-1865)

http://www.banrepcultural.org/blaavirtual/publicacionesbanrep/boletin/boletin67/bol0c.htm

Colombian writer, journalist and essayist, he was born in the rural area of Soacha, Cundinamarca (a small village next to Bogotá), on september 5, 1803. He spent most of his life in the countryside, where he holded the most varied functions, from foreman to landowner, passing by the breed and the harvest, and even being the director of a tobacco industry.

Díaz Castro was part of an influential conservative intellectual group, in which was José María Vergara y Vergara, cofounder of El Mosaico gathering with the author, and which also included, among others, José Joaquín Borda, José Manuel Marroquín, Medardo Rivas, Manuel Ancízar, José María Samper, José Manuel Groot and Jorge Isaacs. From this gathering came up El Mosaico journal, which published Manuela in 1858 by issues. In 1866 Manuela was included in the Museo de cuadros de costumbres collection (Museum of manners portraits, a short stories series which sought to describe the habits and everyday life of that time's colombian society) and in 1889 the novel was published in Paris by the Garnier Brothers' Spanish Library. The author took part in the editorial board of the Biblioteca de Señoritas magazine (Ladies Library), which praised the woman figure in the construction of a Nation state within the Ilustration ideas.

In 1861 his health deteriorated and he was forced to retire from the journalism, but he did not quitted literature; even being sick, he wrote El rejo de enlazar, Los aguinaldos en Chapinero and 32 chapters of Pioquinta o El valle de Tenza, an unfinished novel. He died on april 11, 1865 in Bogotá, and two years later José María Vergara y Vergara published a biographical review in El Iris journal, which is almost the only life-and-work testimony of one of the most prominent colombian authors and about whom could be said is the colombian novel father.
