La vorágine

> José Eustasio Rivera

Novel (spanish)

ISBN (epub): 9789588732008

La vorágine marked my life and paths […] because it has strength, because it breathes life, because it makes me feel, once more, as if I was in the immensity of the plains or sunken in the twilight of the jungle.

[…] I live in the cities as a survival imperative but I constantly travel to wide open spaces, as mountains, plains, and most of all, the jungle, where I have followed José Eustasio Rivera’s steps, who was sent in a commision to establish boundaries between Colombia and Venezuela; in each place –real or fiction– he visited or he mentioned in La vorágine I have repeated, almost possessed, the novel’s passionate poetry.

[…] The most important novels in colombian tradition, until the appearance of Nobel Prize in Literature Gabriel García Márquez’ Cien Años de Soledad, were Jorge Isaacs’ María, romantic novel, and La vorágine by José Eustasio Rivera. […] The latter is known as the most important literary artwork on the Amazon jungle, and it is narrative, poetry and stark denunciation at the same time; it gathers literary and sociological values.

In these times we live in, and with the dramatic changes that mankind has caused on the planet, La vorágine –a master artwork by itself– renews its validity. As we fix our anxious look on the Amazon jungle as a water factory and as producer of the air we breath, La vorágine becomes more relevant for mankind. It can be studied from three points of view: literary, sociological and ecological.

I owe to the jungle and La vorágine a major part of my joy and my nomadic way of life.
